The Loch Ard Gorge is part of Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia, in the vicinity of 10 minutes drive west of The Twelve Apostles. The canyon is named after the scissors boat Loch Ard, which ran ashore on close-by Muttonbird Island on 1 June 1878 approaching the finish of a three-month trip from England to Melbourne. Of the fifty-four travelers and team, just two survived: Tom Pearce, at 15 years of age, a boat's student, and Eva Carmichael, an Irishwoman moving with her family, at 17 years of age. Consistent with dedications at the site, Pearce was washed aground, and protected Carmichael from the water in the wake of listening to her cries for assistance.
